Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone II Home Style Bird Feeder

Make sure that the seed stays for the birds with this Perky-Pet Squirrel-Be-Gone II Home Style Bird Feeder. This unique feeder is equipped with weight-activated perches, which means when an animal that's heavier than the bird the seed is intended for comes to visit, the perch goes down and closes the feeding ports, blocking off the seed. It has an adorable house design, complete with a roof, faux chimney, and front porch perch, and there are strategically placed cutouts that look like windows and a front door — all finished in a bold green color that adds to the country charm.

Squirrel Resistant Design

To offer defense against squirrels, this feeder boasts multiple great features. First, is the feeder’s weight-activated perch, which is calibrated to support the weight of birds but not squirrels. When squirrels try to gain access to the seed, the ports close off under their weight. Birds can sit on the perch without activating it. The sensitivity can also be adjusted to keep out larger nuisance birds. In addition, the chimney lid lock prevents squirrels from lifting the lid, while the metal frame discourages chewing. To ensure a 100% squirrel proof feeder, placement is key! Hang the feeder with at least 18 inches of clearance on all sides so squirrels can’t easily reach the ports without activating the perch.

Durable and Versatile

This feeder has an all-metal construction designed to stand up to the weather and squirrel invaders. The metal is powder-coated in a bold green eye-catching color and provides enhanced rust resistance and durability. This feeder can be hung or pole mounted for versatile placement anywhere around your yard.

Easy to Clean & Fill

The removable roof and large opening make this feeder easy to fill with up to 8 lb capacity of black-oil sunflower seed, mixed seed, hulled sunflower seed, or safflower seed. Cleaning the feeder is also easy! We recommend cleaning at least every two weeks and regularly checking the to ensure the seed is free of insects and mold.

Attractive, Rustic Design

Birds and bird lovers alike can’t deny the charm of this delightful feeder. This unique feeder is styled after a country home, complete with a bold green finish, metal roof, and windows and door. The large perch even resembles a front porch. The roof-style lid is even topped with a chimney, which conveniently locks the lid in place.

So I ordered this item, and the first one I got was defective (the adjustable arm had cut into the side, and thus the perch bar would not sit even). I contacted Perky Pet, their customer service was super nice and got me out a new one. The new one was in perfect condition. First let me say I didn''t buy this feeder for it''s squirrel resistance. I live in South East Texas and have been feeding birds long enough to know that squirrels will figure out any feeder. The only thing I have ever found to keep squirrels away from my seed is a pole with a squirrel baffle, and make sure it is not near anything the squirrels can jump from (i.e. fences, trees, pots, etc.).
I bought this item because I thought it looked great, and I love the fact that the birds can only eat from one side of it. I have too many feeders where birds can eat all around it, and as a result you can get birds eating behind the feeder (and thus the feeder blocks your view of them). No such issues with this feeder, whatever bird is eating from it, I can see perfectly from my living room chair. This feeder is really well made and is beautiful in appearance. I prefer this version over the red one, but the red one looks very good as well. Because I have it on a pole with a squirrel baffle I can''t really speak to the squirrel be gone feature. I can say that it looks great, and the birds love it. I have yet to see any large birds try to eat from it. The biggest I have had is the Northern Mockingbird, and the smallest has been the Carolina Chickadee. This is the best looking feeder I have ever had and it is quickly be coming my birds favorite. I am feeding sunflower seeds mixed with C&S suet nuggets in it.
I attached a picture of the original one I received that was damaged (not the best picture), as well as a video from the new replacement I got which is permanently in my yard. If this review helped I would appreciate a thumbs up vote. Best of luck in your shopping and let me know if I can help in anyway.

I have two major complaints about this product. First, it is not squirrel-proof. It took the squirrels in my yard about ten seconds to get to the food. But more than that, the birds don’t like it. My previous bird feeder attracted cardinals, goldfinches, tufted titmouse, purple finches, indigo grosbeaks, and even red bibbed grosbeaks. This feeder only attracts house finches even though I am using the same exact birdseed mix that I used in my other bird feeder. The goldfinches try to get to it, but there isn’t enough room since there are not single perches, and the house finches take up too much room. This is the single most disappointing bird feeder I have ever bought. I don’t think I kept the box or I would return it. The reviews made it look so good I tossed the box immediately. My bad.

I was dubious when I got this since I saw a few reviews that said squirrels got in by hanging upside down, so I purposely got the green one with the chimney instead of the weather vane one, which has less for them to grab onto. I’ve had it for over a month and I’m so glad I kept it. I have mine hanging on a shepherd’s hook out in the front yard. So I appreciated that it comes with a thing for hanging it (it also comes with an accessory for mounting on a pole if that’s what you want).

The squirrels have definitely tried, and failed, to raid it. And they are smart and destructive so I really thought they’d find a way in but it’s been over a month and still holding fast. And it’s metal so they can’t chew their way in. (Also just a tip, you can prevent them from even trying if you keep a dedicated squirrel feeder nearby. They won’t waste their time and energy trying to get in if they have their own food)

And I have to say, I have enjoyed watching the birds more than I thought I would. It’s fun, in addition to the usual chickadees and sparrows, I’ve gotten woodpeckers and cardinals too (it’s winter so that’s about as exotic as we will get around here but it’s still fun). And you can also set the sensitivity of the door so that it closes on larger birds if you want. (personally I leave it at the least sensitive setting because they’ve all been surprisingly polite, they basically take turns grabbing a seed and flying away with it so the next guy can get in).

The only thing I’d change if I could do it again would be to buy the larger one so that they can feed from both sides at once. But this size is cheaper and was a good first foray into bird feeding. I really like it and am glad I bought it.

The little ''chimney'' is the lock that holds the top onto the frame by twisting it and it in turns twists a cam-like gadget in the fram of the feeder. I did not like it from the onset. Within less than a week a raccoon or a couple of smart squirrells with night googles managed to unscrew the chimney and treat themselves and the birds to a feed box open to the blue sky.

I took the feeder and top to my shop and removed the cam gizmo then found a compression spring a bit larger than the cam hardware and replace the screw that holds on the cam key. That provided upward pressure for the cam/fram locking. Now, I have to or at least the raccoons have to, push down on chimney and top then twist the chimney to gain access to the interior of the feeder.

EDIT: even with the spring added to the chimney cam, raccoons (apparently) are able to turn the cam lock and get ito the feeder. This creates a smorgasbord effect for the birds. Yay. Too, the wire hangers are easily bent and separated from the bodyfrom the weight of the raccoons. We live in-between suburbia and a very rural area so we have lots of critters that roam in and out of the woodlands on our property. The bird feeder is not built, nor should it be, to withstand full frontal attacks by raccoons, hordes of squirrels and the occasional black bear. It is a good bird feed. It was not designed to be a buffet station for The Wild Kingdom.

This is the 4th or 5th bird feeder I''ve tried, but it will be the last. This is a sturdy, metal, but very attractive feeder capable of holding a full bag of bird seed, which absolute defeats even the most determined squirrels! We got some green covered wire from Home Depot, and strung it between 2 trees, then used a green metal clip to attach this green bird feeder onto the wire. It hangs there - suspended in mid-air - and the birds know exactly what it''s for! Our 3 squirrels (Alvin, Simon, Theodore) have tried and tried, but failed and eventually given up! Alvin, however, found that if he pushes on the glass windows, he can get a few seeds out. (He is VERY persistent!) But we foiled him by taping the glass firmly with clear tape from the inside. (Sorry Alvin!)
Cleaning is only necessary if the feeder gets wet from rain, lawn sprinklers, or excessive humidity. Then, just remove the top, dump the dry seeds into a bucket, and remove the wet/moldy seeds with a screw driver. Wash out the bottom and feeder openings, dry thoroughly with a paper towel, then pour the dry seed back in and return the top, locking it into place. That''s it!

My only complaint was getting it assembled. There was quite a problem getting the side pieces to fit together properly; it was like a jig-saw puzzle! Fortunately, there was a HELP LINE number to call, and a very friendly young lady walked me through it, step by step. (THANK YOU!)

I am SO happy to have this beautiful bird feeder in our lush, green, front lawn ~ and so are the birds!

Update: somewhat squirrel-proof, but not deer-proof! This large buck managed to knock the roof off when he got startled--I must not have put the top back on tightly--but then he came back to graze. Since it turned cold, deer have been emptying this house out each night, I guess they lick from the tiny bird openings. We''re buying cob for the deer, too, but I guess everyone is hungry when it snows.
We love our new squirrel-proof bird house. So far, we’ve had house finches and nuthatches visit it, but the squirrels have tried and failed! The photo shows a female finch and a red- breasted nuthatch eating together. And as you can see from the silly little video, hanging this house from a shepherd’s hook helps make it inaccessible. (But if this house was hanging from a tree, I think squirrels would win.) We put the house up a week ago, and have seen quite a few unsuccessful squirrel assaults. My husband ordered two 72” metal hooks from Amazon, and they work great for this feeder, which is much heavier than all our tube feeders. (Sorry for the audio with the video, I was laughing at the squirrel.)

I wondered about their saying squirrel proof - The squirrels now learned not to climb on it, they just grab the edge and shake it ''till empty...

on edit: (2/18/2017) I had already relocated the feeder well away from "anything" other than a very slippery vertical pole. I did come up with a second issue though. "rain" I will need to build some type of rain shield to extend the roof overhang to better shield the "seed opening." Rain soaks the product at the opening until it''s a pretty solid mass that then blocks the remaining product in the container. Rain then migrates out of range of what the birds can reach at the opening. Now the wet, fermenting, solid mass is inside the container fully blocks further dispensing. For now, I just use a small amount of product at the opening. This avoids a mass, "up inside" the container. (but then requires constant attention to keep product available to our flying friends)

Don''t get me wrong, I do like it (the unit) and I''m sure it would be OK in more arid or "shielded" areas. But it doesn''t work well for me (as is) in Tennessee and the amount of rain we get here. I do like it otherwise though. I like its very easy to fill "removable roof," and the amount of product it will hold. My main reason for purchase was to avoid squirrels "at a specific location" where I initially wanted it located and the amount of product it will hold. Both are compromised "FOR MY INTENDED APPLICATION."

note: the manufacturer advertises this assuming the squirrel "gets to the unit" - It doesn''t work for that purpose as they (the cott''n picking squirrels) learn to climb on top and shake it, not step on the door activator-It must be located "inaccessible to the squirrels"

Again though, I do like how it''s built in every way, if I could just keep the product at the opening dry...(squirrel resistance aside)

I appreciate the manufacturer followup, but I kind''a already figured that out... end edit 2/18/2017

This is the first squirrel proof bird feeder we can recommend. We have purchased lots of others saying they were squirrel proof but our squirrels managed to shake / bite and thus get to the bird seed. I saw this online in USA and was most happy to see we could buy the exact same type in the UK. We have watched the squirrels try all sorts of ways to get the seeds - biting - swinging upside down - going different ways to no avail. They are still trying and top marks for their tenacity. We have separated (by the use of cardboard) the inside of middle section and so have put in sunflower seeds, peanut bits and worms. It took a couple of weeks for the birds to adjust to this new feeder. Now we see tits & robins use the feeder. Less frequently we have seen the sparrows go to the middle section for the worms but mainly they gather the seeds from the ground. Though they go to the feeders in the front garden all through the day. Hopefully the sparrows will use this new feeder regularly. Highly recommend this bird feeder - looks great - bought the poles - good value. Recommend that the manufacturer divides the internal compartments into three so birds go to their preferred section.

This was bought as a Fathers Day Gift. I was very pleasantly surprised at how sturdy and well manufactured this item was. It was packaged well, and is very useful in a garden where birds are enjoyed, but the big birds are costly to feed, and squirrels are a problem. Ideal for the little birds, and impressive in how it all works. The only issue was that it took a while to work out how to open the house, and how to load it, there are no instructions, and it took a while to realise that actually it is the chimney, and you need to twist it....... Otherwise great gift, received with great delight, and I shall be getting more as Christmas presents....
